Parce Sepulto. Dying in Pompeii.
Mother’s Heart
In the small necropolis outside Porta Vesuvio, among the tombs, stands the sepulchral tomb of Caio Vestorio Prisco. It is an altar tomb enclosed by a masonry fence.
The tomb is decorated with stuccoes and paintings with gladiator scenes and silverware services. The inscription above tells us that the tomb was built by his mother Mulvia Prisca at her own expenses to commemorate her son who died at just 22 years old.
Moreover the city of Pompeii, by decision of the decurions, offered public soil to built the sepulcher and 2000 sesterces for the celebration of the young magistrate.
