The mirmillo Attilio
CIL IV 10236
M (arcus) ATT (ilius) / M (arcus) Attilius (pugnarum) I (coronarum) I v (icit) / L RAECIUS FELIX (pugnarum) XII (coronarum) XII M (issus)
On a tomb of the Necropolis of Porta Nocera, a graffiti of a fight of two gladiators tells us the successes of Marco Attilio. After a victorious debut, the mirmillo wins his second meeting by beating the trax Lucio Recio Felix. The unknown “fan” also engraves the career of the two gladiators on the grave: while Marco Attilio, the winner, fought and won only once, Felix sustained 12 fights winning them all, up to the one against Marco Attilio. However, the many victories of the defeated gladiator allow him to be pardoned (missus) by the public
