Pompeii small group tour with an Archaeologist

I decided the day before to get a private guided tour for my visit to Pompeii. Askos responded right away to my request and was able to accommodate me on short notice, even arranging a guide for me at a time that worked better for me. My guide was Maria, who was wonderful and very knowledgable, and I really enjoyed my tour with her. I think the best way to see and understand Pompeii without getting overwhelmed is with a guide, and I highly recommend this tour.

Our guided tour of the Amalfi Coast with Francesco was absolutely perfect! He was fun and personable, and did a great job drawing attention to points of interest and explaining what we were seeing. The views were breathtaking; the stops in Sorrento, Amalfi, and Ravello were wonderful! This tour has to be the best way to see the Amalfi Coast!

We had a fantastic custom tour to visit Pompeii and Oplontis. Our guide Laura was wonderful—incredibly knowledgeable and told us so many fascinating details. I am an art historian myself and I can say that Laura was an excellent and well informed guide. Francesco was our very friendly driver who picked us up in Naples and helped us through the entire day. Our guide Paolo was simply excellent. As a practising academic archaeologist, Paolo was able to combine for us useful historical information with entertaining tales around the artefacts and life in Pompeii at the time. He kept us engaged as we walked around the site with commentary about the various excavations at Pompeii since the 18th century and intriguing questions for our group. I can strongly recommend this tour for those who wish to learn more about life in Pompeii leading up to the Vesuvius eruption in AD 79, while extending their knowledge of the volcano eruption and its aftermath.

We visited Pompei in June. Our archaeologist guide was Giulia. The tour was AMAZING and not only because of Pompei, which is a very emotional place, but also thanks to Giulia. She was at the same time friendly and very professional. THANK YOU!

Excellent tour with Antonio! Highly recommended. There is so much to see, so having Antonio explain the history and select buildings and sites was really great. He is really knowledgeable and a great communicator (head phones were great so we could always hear him without having to stand right next to him). He also made suggestions for other sites we could explore on our own after the tour.

Highly recommend this tour of Pompeii!! Family of 5 with 3 teenagers, everyone enjoyed and learned a lot. Our guide Teresa shared loads of information, answered many questions, and told stories in an engaging and quite interesting way. Definitely a must do to maximize time learning about Pompeii!

We were guided by Antonio. He was superb. He clearly has a huge depth of knowledge not just of Pompeii’s archaeology but also the historical background. He understood that a tour cannot hope to show everything, so he picked a good number of fine examples of types of buildings, leaving the clients to explore further after the tour. This meant we did not rush. He brought the people of Pompeii by revealing their homes, leisure and work activities. Antonio was happy to take questions and not once was he beaten! He did all this with lots of humour and went over the time the tour officially lasted. The bluetooth earphone meant were always able to hear him while able to hang back to look at a particular thing if interest. A high quality tour. Seeing Pompeii without a guide would be a mistake. Askos Tours in the person of Antonio provided an excellent tour. Would give 6 stars if we could.

Compramos el pack de Pompeya y Herculano. En Pompeya estuvimos con Lello y fue súper divertido, aún con el calor que hacía nos lo hizo pasar muy bien, lo explicó todo perfecto y de forma accesible e interesante. En Herculano fue más sosegado pero también lo pasamos bien.

Muy bien. Tener en cuenta que es un grupo de 20 personas. En total ha durado casi 2 horas y media. Los cuerpos se ve en el anticuario, no e el paseo que se vio uno muy rapido al final. Sabiendo eso, el resto muy bien, con una guía excelente: Maria Laura

Excellent tour, Giulia was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic -she obviously loves her job. Leave time at the end to explore on your own . Our tour was about 2 1/2 hr. and there was still much more to see.

Nous avons fait la visite avec Nello. C’était super, clair,captivant,rigolo parfois ,on s’est tous senti immergé a l’époque et avons appris plein de choses . Il répondait aux questions de nos enfants de 9 et 11 ans qui ont adoré aussi. Les 2 heures passent trop vite et ça fait un sacré vide quand la visite guidée est terminée. Merci encore !

It was an incredible experience, in an incredible place. First of all, we must thank our great guide, Paola, who so obviously loves her work and loves the place. She is knowledgeable, friendly, with a sense of humour and besides her excellent english and french she also spoke excellent greek! She helped us understand the place so much so that after the tour ended we spent three more hours in Pompeii visiting the places she suggested. The tour was well organised, no time lost in queues, the group was small and easily manageable, the spots we visited well selected for their informative but also sentimental value. We were very satisfied and we highly recommend it.

Nous avons fait le tour de Pompei avec Alfredo, archéologue qui a travaillé sur le site. Il nous a partagé ses connaissances et fait revivre la vie de l’époque avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme, en français qui plus est ! Un guide est indispensable pour vraiment profiter du site et de toutes les petites subtilités invisibles à l’œil nu. Je conseille. Nous avons été à Pompei de Naples par nous-même, c’est vraiment facile et pas cher avec le Circumvesuviana, pas forcément utile de prendre un tour complet, mais un guide sur place, oui !

We went on the Pompeii guided tour and our tour guide was Diego. We absolutely loved the tour and how he explained the story of Pompeii in an interesting and expert way. Would definitely recommend to anyone, not a second of the tour was boring or exhausting!

Very interesting tour. The tour was made all greater by excellent tour guide Paolo Gardelli which took the group to the next level with his enthusiastic explanations and excellent verbal communication. Thanks to Paolo the trip totally exceeded our expectations on this subject. Seeing Pompeii through the eye of an archeologist is a must I believe.

Esperienza da ripetere! La nostra fuida è stata Giulia, un’archeologa spumeggiante, fiera napoletana e la piú alta di Pompei!! Ci ha accompagnati in un tour non solo alla scoperta dei luoghi, ma anche dela storia e degli usi e costumi dell’epoca, lasciando sempre spazio alle curiosità, alle domande e ad una battuta. Le ore con lei sono volate e non ne avevamo abbastanza, perché non è una semplice guida turistica, ma una studiosa preparata e professionale che ci ha conquistato con la sua passione! Consiglio vivamente questo tour che non vedo l’ora di poter ripetere con lei per conoscere ancora meglio i meravigliosi scavi di Pompei!

Great tour of Pompei with Antonio. The site is incredible, huge, and can only be truly understood with the help of a guide. Antonio was very knowledgeable, shared a lot of information, took us to many different places of the site and he spent much more time than the agreed 2 hours with us! This was a fantastic experience.

Really excellent guided tour with Paolo as our guide. He was very informative and communicative, and it was a real pleasure to be in the hands of an expert. I think it would have been a bit overwhelming to visit Pompeii without a guide, as the site is huge – we felt it was money very well spent, and got a lot out of it. The communications and organisation by Askos were also excellent. Recommended!

We had another wonderful experience when we visited Herculaneum under the expert guidance of Luciano Leone. The initial view of the site itself as one enters is astonishing, but it takes a guide of experience and knowledge like Luciano to bring to life what you ate seeing and to help you understand the differences in the catastrophic events that covered both cities creating unique sites of preservation.
Luciano gave us a great welcome and had interesting props and photos that he personally compiled to illustrate his points.
He engaged with our granddaughter amusing her and informing her with a lovely manner.
From our experience of our two tours arranged with Askos I highly recommend them for their great service and their wonderful guides.

Our guide was Paola Vitiello, she was very welcoming and as well as being knowledgeable proved to have a great sense of fun. We are travelling with our 11 year old granddaughter and Paola certainly kept her interested throughout the tour.
I visited Pompeii with my mother previously, we didn’t have a guide, and I must say that having a guide, especially one like Paola, makes all the difference. Pompeii came to life under Paola’s expert guidance.
Our whole experience with Askos tours from booking through to our arrivederci with Paola was a model of efficiency and courtesy.

Private 2 person tour of the amphiteater of Santa Maria Vetere Capua and Archeological Museum with Archeologist Michele Maria Lamberti. Excellent guide and very competent in his knowledge. Michele’s explanations were very thorough and interesting. Worth the time and money. Easy to book and pay. Will request again for another tour.

We had a really informative tour of Pompeii by Giulia, our guide, who was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining and made the whole site come alive. She was full of energy and carried on well beyond the allotted time. Thank you, Giulia.

We were delighted with Askos and this tour. We chose the small group tour (10 people in our group) because we wanted to make the most of our time in Pompeii. It’s a very big site and it would be easy to glance at the ruins without understanding anything about the civilisation that existed before the devastating volcanic eruption. Our guide was Michele, an archaeologist with a vast knowledge of the site. He brought the story of the town to life and helped us to appreciate how the people lived, worked and loved from its earliest times. His English was excellent and he regularly invited questions. We were gently guided round the principle sights of Sector 7 & beyond. At the end of the tour, he suggested things that we might want to see on our own. With our new-found knowledge, we really felt that we had made the best of our extra time there. The ground is uneven so it’s important to watch your step and have comfortable footwear. We toured Pompeii in March 2022. We took water with us but nothing to eat so we bought sandwiches in the only place open inside the site. They were surprisingly good and there was even a vegan option! There are few toilet facilities in Pompeii and a comfort break during the tour would have been welcome. The weather was ideal and there were very few people there. A few days later, we met a couple who had visited Pompeii on their own and complained that it was just a lot of ruins that they hadn’t understood. And that’s why you hire a guide…… To sum up, we were delighted with this tour and Michele our guide was fantastic.

The guide was knowledgeable and it shows she loves Pompeii. She provided infinite information.. but the majority of participants were trying to follow the story that was broken…with very little interaction. The weather was horrible and didn’t help but we were there trying to enjoy what we could. I didn’t enjoy the tour, it was a dump of information and the English was a little broken. My 9 years old didn’t understand a word and it was my goal for him to enjoy and learn. mission failed.

Sergio was a fantastic guide. Can’t recommend this tour highly enough. His knowledge and passion made it a once in a lifetime experience

Absolutely loved yesterday’s tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Both our driver Federico and our guide, Michaelo we’re awesome, knowledgeable, and timely. The train trip from Rome worked perfectly. The only thing I would suggest is to allow time to see the small museum and visit the gift shop at Pompeii. Thank you!

What a wonderful time! Our guide Nello provided us with many pieces of information about the building of the city, its history, how people used to live (with many funny anecdotes), and his work as an archeologist. I highly recommend booking this tour (of course 2hours is’nt enough to see everything the amazing city of Pompei has to offer, but it’s a very good start).

We can highly recommend this guided tour. Our tour guide Alfredo provided us with a lot of interesting information -much of it was new to us although we had been to pompeii before- and showed us a variety of buildings. He provided a relaxed atmosphere with a few jokes and was very friendly. It was also clear that he knew what he was talking about, he seemed very competent and professional. We booked the tour in German and although he was a local and it was not his first language, his German was perfect. The tour lastet two hours which was the perfect lengths. Long enough to take a look at many different things but also not too long to get loose concentration. After the tour he gave us some additional tipps what else to see in pompeii. The tour started at nine, which was nice because since we went in the middle of August it got very hot later during the day.

Diego was charming, knowledgeable, and made Pompeii truly understandable. A fabulous way to tour Pompeii.
While the group (17-20) was much larger than I anticipated (to Americans, a small group is a dozen or fewer), the use of headsets
was perfect — no one had to worry about missing what Diego said and we didn’t seem rushed or crowded.

Our tour through Pompeii with Paolo was fantastic. He is amazingly knowledgeable and friendly. You can tell he’s truly passionate about the history of these ancient cities. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Pompeii. I would also recommend to go at an earlier time, the tour won’t cover the entire site as it’s huge so you’ll want to set aside time to walk around yourself as well.

Our private tour of Herculaneum with Luciano was outstanding! He showed us all the important places and explained them in a way we never would have had on our own. Absolutely loved it!

The tour was well organized and my daughter and I really enjoyed the pace and knowledge of our tour guide Michele. The tour was just over two hrs and gave us a good historical and archeological view of the happenings in Pompei.

Our tour was amazing, our guide was an experienced archeologist and had worked at the Pompeii site. The vast knowledge he has acquired was amazing, he left us filled with amazing facts about Pompeii, Vesuvius and the lives of the people who lived in Pompeii and the region.
